We are delighted to invite you to the launch of the book: A New Wave of Anti-Racism in Europe? Racialized Minorities at the Centre. As Europe witnesses an intensifying backlash against anti-racism, our new open-access book invites readers to examine what is really happening on the ground. This book explores how racialized minorities across Europe have reshaped the meanings, practices, and futures of anti-racism. Emerging in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, the volume interrogates whether we are indeed witnessing a “new wave” of anti-racism—and what such wave-thinking might reveal or obscure. Bringing together fine-grained empirical studies from diverse European contexts - like Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the EU-, the contributors examine anti-racist activism across time and place, uncovering the long but often silenced histories of racialized minority organizing that predate current debates.
This launch will include an introduction by editors Ilke Adam and Jean Beaman, and then brief presentations by several chapter authors, including Sibo Kanobana (Open University), Diana Mulinari (University of Lund), Rosana Albuquerque (Universidade Aberta), Ojeaku Nwabuzo, and Kekeli Kpognon. We are honoured to be joined by Professor Alana Lentin (Western Sidney University) as discussant. Lentin's unique comparative work on multiple forms of anti-racism in Europe greatly inspired this volume. And her most recent book, The New Racial Regime: Recalibrations of White Supremacy, shows how louder racialized anti-racist voices, around 2020 in particular, were quickly followed by counter-mobilizations to recalibrate white supremacy. This virtual book launch will be a space for rigorous discussion, critical reflection, and collective inquiry into anti-racism’s possibilities and limits in our historical moment. We invite scholars, students, activists, community organizers, and all engaged in racial justice work to join the conversation.
