As the call for the 2024 IMISCOE PhD school is out now, it is a good occasion to throw back to the previous one. BIRMM proudly hosted the IMISCOE PhD school on “Critical reflections on migration studies, racism and discrimination”. The event took place from April 24th to 28th 2023 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The PhD school was co-organized with CEDEM (ULiège), CESSMIR (Ghent University) and CEMIS (Antwerp University). 26 PhD researchers joined from Europe, North America, and Africa.
The PhD school proposed a multi-stakeholder approach consisting of keynote lectures, intensive feedback sessions, interactive panels with scholars, artists, activists and practitioners, an outreach event and reflections on policy advise and media discourse. Alongside rich daily programs from 9 am to 5pm, BIRMM also hosted two evening events: a decolonial guided tour in Brussels and an evening panel debate for a wider audience on how cities engage in anti-racism policies. Participants testified that they were very pleased by the enormous progress in learning they acquired during the PhD school:
"I found this week so helpful & thought-provoking & inspiring! A really interesting range of speakers and activities throughout the week."
"The excursion to the museum and the decolonial walk were a very nice addition to the programme. They complemented the more academic sessions very well!"
