Silvia Almenara Niebla is a Postdoc researcher on the ERC-funded project "Reel Borders" (led by prof. Kevin Smets). She obtained her PhD from the Universidad de La Laguna in 2020 (awarded with the extraordinary doctorate prize) with a study on transnational belonging and media among refugees from a gender perspective. She holds degrees in Political Science and in International Relations. She has also undertaken research stays at Utrecht University, Nouakchott University, and the University of Oxford. Her main research interests are refugee studies, emotions and affects in mobility processes, and everyday media practices during displacement. She has also published in different international journals on matters of diasporic processes through gender perspective, affects and emotions in protracted situations of displacement, and social media practices of gender control.
Research expertise: diaspora studies, refugee studies, feminist theory and intersectionality, media practices and emotions.
Research methodology: qualitative methods, in-depth interviews, focus groups, multi-situated ethnography.
