Seminar with Lionel Zevounou: Racial Equality and Discrimination (in French)
As part of the Critical Approaches to Race seminar series, Lionel Zevounou will present his latest book "L'égalité dans ses rapports à la race: Des discriminations subies par les travailleurs marocains de la SNCF (1970-2018)”. His investigation delves into the institutionalized discrimination faced by thousands of Moroccan workers, the "Chibanis," employed by the French National Railway Company (SNCF) from the 1970s to 2018.
The study highlights a legal battle involving over 800 Moroccan workers and their descendants, who sought justice for decades of racial discrimination. On January 31, 2018, the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed the existence of nationality-based discrimination by the SNCF, which violated a 1963 bilateral agreement between France and Morocco. Despite this agreement guaranteeing equal rights to Moroccan and French workers, the SNCF and the French state systematically imposed a lower employment status on Moroccan workers, creating a long-standing system of racial inequality.
