Words that matter: critical reflections on categorisation from migration and diversity research
Welcome to the fourth edition of the joint CESSMIR (UGent) – MIGLOBA (University of Antwerp) - BIRMM (VUB) – research day! We aim for a day full of inspiring talks and ample possibilities for networking.
The research day CESSMIR-MIGLOBA-BIRMM 2024 will focus on categorisation relating to migration and diversity. Keynote speakers in the morning and afternoon workshop will explore how policy and institutional categories related to migration and ethnicity are used in different contexts (e.g. census, political discourses, legal and policy work) and how these categories affect the social world and the way people think of migrants and ethnic minorities. Sociological research, linguistic studies, law and political sciences are some of the perspectives that will be used throughout the day to explore the above issues.
