
Catharina Lis
Biography
Professor emeritus Catharina Lis (1945) studied history at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where she obtained her PhD in 1975. In 1986, this dissertation was published by Yale University Press, titled Social Change and the Labouring Poor: Antwerp, 1770-1860. Between 1979 and 1988, she was a professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and was also a member of the History Department at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. As of then, she is a full-time professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Together with Hugo Soly, she conducts comparative and cross-period research on industrialization and entrepreneurship, poverty and social policy, craft guilds, forms of deviant behavior, and perceptions of labor.
