
Heidi Deneweth
Biography
Heidi Deneweth studied history at the University of Ghent. In 2008, she obtained her PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with the dissertation Huizen en mensen. Wonen, verbouwen, investeren en lenen in drie Brugse wijken van de late middeleeuwen tot de negentiende eeuw (Houses and People. Living, building, investing and borrowing in three neighbourhoods of Bruges from the Late Middle Ages to the nineteenth century). She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher on the interaction between labour markets, migration and social policy (VUB, 2008) and on household finance, the composition of wealth and social mobility in early modern cities in the Low Countries (Utrecht University, 2009-2012 / VUB 2012-2013). Since 2013, she works as a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) on Entrepreneurial strategies of building contractors. The case of Antwerp 1490-1670 (2013-2016) and Risks and opportunities. The building trades in Antwerp and Brussels, 1500-1900 (2016-2019). She holds a 10% ZAP-mandate (VUB) on Urban Housing and Urban Development in a Historical Perspective and teaches the master course Urbanisation in the Early Modern Period. She is member of research team HOST (Historical Research into Urban Transformation Processes) and the research groups BCUS (Brussels Center on Urban Studies) and CHsB (Brussels Research Centre for Construction Histories).
