Lars Breuls graduated in 2015 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as a Master in Criminology (with the greatest distinction). He started working as a researcher at the Criminology Department on the study of decision-making processes regarding recall to prison of conditionally released offenders (October 2015 – September 2016).
He then obtained a Ph.D. fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), which allowed him to carry out ethnographic research in immigration detention in Belgium and in the Netherlands (October 2016 – September 2020). He succesfully defended his Ph.D. on immigration detention practices on 7 September 2020.
His research interests include practices of immigration control and practices of prison sentence implementation.
