From culture to race: A decolonial search for rethinking ageing, health and care
Research on ageing and care in ethnically diverse European contexts has long been, and remains, dominated by culture as an explanatory lens. Cultural background is routinely used to frame research questions and to explain differences in health outcomes, care needs, and the underuse of professional care among migrantized and racialized older adults. In this seminar, Saloua Berdai Chaouni argues that conceptual and methodological choices shape what we can see, and have contributed to how racism has been obscured at the intersection of ageing, health, and care. Drawing on decolonial insights, this seminar traces efforts to move beyond this one-dimensional lens and challenge racism’s evasiveness in the field.
