Els Dumortier

Els Dumortier is professor at the Departement of Criminology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). She is a founding member and Board Member of the (Flemish) Children’s Rights Knowledge Centre. She also is an active member of the Working Group on Juvenile Justice at the European Society of Criminology. Her research specifically focuses on questions concerning youth justice and children’s rights in practice (empirical children’s rights) both in contemporary times and in the past (20th century).

Currently, Els Dumortier is particularly interested in 1) empirical children’s rights in juvenile justice contexts (such as police interrogations and youth institutions) 2) in asylum procedures and in 3) voicing youth at social risk.
