CLUSTER 3: Media, culture and language
BIRMM researchers in the cluster of 'media, culture, and language' focus largely on representations of migrants and minorities in film, in literature and the arts, and on linguistic practices and languages of and by migrants and minorities. They study for instance films about borders and how they express the themes of belonging and identity,, and the political and societal discourses on migration, the representations of minorities in literature and the arts in contexts of migration and displacement and topics such as heritage language education, intercultural communication, language policy and planning, and language contact in multilingual contexts. Increasingly, researchers in this cluster engage in co-creation with migrant populations, e.g. for films and for writing and theatre making.
