Over the past five years (2019-2024), the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) has brought together more than 100 researchers from 11 disciplines at VUB, establishing itself as a central hub for migration and minority studies in Brussels. This has significantly boosted VUB’s international profile and success in securing research funding on migration, minorities and related topics.
We are delighted to share that BIRMM will continue its work as a Network for Societal Impact through Science (NSIS). As BIRMM moves into this next phase, it aims to maximize the societal impact of VUB’s research on migration and minorities. Four key strategies will guide this transition: we will foster more collaboration with civil society and migrant and minority communities to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of our research and outreach, we will develop even more accessible science communication tools such as media campaigns and policy briefs, we will tackle migration and minorities-related issues at multiple levels, from local governance to EU matters, and we will collaborate with a diverse board of 22 external partners.
Through these initiatives, BIRMM is ready to make significant contributions to policy, improve the lives of migrant and minority communities, inform professionals, and engage the public.
