On the occasion of International Migrants' Day, BIRMM has celebrated this crucial event by devoting the week of 18 December to unpacking different aspects of migrants' experiences, ranging from the factors contributing to the decision to migrate to the several challenges migrants confront in host societies, living as undocumented migrants or as refugees. Migration is one of the core research fields of our centre and we have addressed these issues by zooming in on some BIRMM publications which came out during 2023 on our social media channels. In particular, the campaign featured reports and journal articles authored by BIRMM researchers involved in the BRIDGES project, as well as from the Department of Family Medicine and Chronic Care, the Centre for Expertise on Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality and the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research.
On the one hand, through this week-long campaign we aimed at showcasing the potential of interdisciplinary research uncovering multiple facets of (potential) migrants’ experiences and hurdles in origin and destination countries. On the other hand, we wanted to put in the spotlight migrants’ perspectives and views, as they emerge from the studies highlighted within the campaign, with a view to underscoring how they often diverge from common assumptions and political discourses. We hope to have provided you with food-for-thought and inspiration for the year that is fast approaching. We will come back with new insightful events and publications in 2024!
