She is also member of the interdisciplinary research group Voicing Youth at Social Risk (VOIC) at the VUB. Her research studied the presence, construction and problematisation of girls and boys within the Youth Court. In this research, the interaction between sex and gender, and other aspects such as class, age, religion, sexual orientation, family background, financial situation, school situation, vulnerabilities,…. were taken into account, putting forward an intersectionality perspective. She is engaged in RHEA, the Centre of Expertise Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality (VUB) and is a member of the Working Group Gender, Crime & Justice (European Society of Criminology). Her research interests lie in the field of youth criminology and youth law. More specifically she focuses on questions about gender, intersectionality and social vulnerability in the youth court, practices of judicial actors and (voicing) vulnerable minors in contact with the youth justice system. Sofie is currently preparing a research project (with An Nuytiens and Olga Petintseva), aimed at voicing Romani girls and women who came into contact with police and justice, using visual and art-based methods.
