Biography

Sylvie Gadeyne (born in 1970) obtained a Master degree in Sociology at the University of Ghent (1992) and a Master Degree in Demography at the Université Catholique de Louvain (1998). Since 1995, she has been involved as a demographic research associate in several projects. In 1999, she started working at Interface Demography of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where she was involved in the very first project on socio-economic inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Belgium. In 2005, this resulted in a PhD in Sociology. As a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders, her research on socio-economic inequalities in mortality was extended to the 2000s (2007-2015). She participated in several international projects, mostly on socio-economic inequalities in health and mortality in Europe. Currently, she is also the promoter of several national research projects concerning health and mortality inequalities in Belgium. Besides her research activities, she was involved in 2006-2015 as a professor at the University of Ghent (Methodology of Social Research), the Catholic University Leuven (Sociology of Population) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In 2015, she also coordinated a new educational project ‘Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences’ at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel – Universiteit Gent. Since October 2016 she has been appointed a full-time professorship at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Statistics I, Social Science Research Methodology, Social Demography, Social Epidemiology and European Population Issues).
