Kevin Smets is assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he teaches on media and culture, cultural theory, and visual culture. He is a senior researcher at CEMESO. He holds a MA in Modern History (Leuven, 2008), an MSc in Culture Management (Antwerp, 2009) and a PhD in Film Studies and Visual Culture (Antwerp, 2013). He holds a postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) since 2013, which he carries out at the Visual and Digital Cultures Research Center (ViDi) at the University of Antwerp, and is an associated member of the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies at the same university. Kevin has been a visiting fellow at Bilkent University (Ankara), School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), Bilgi University (Istanbul) and Freie Universität Berlin. His main research interests include media and migration, audience research, ethnic and political conflict, and the Middle East, particularly Turkey.
