Ayfer Erkul (1969) started studying History at the VUB as a work student in 2013 and combined this with a full-time job as journalist for the Belgian quality newspaper De Morgen. After a career of more than 20 years she left the newspaper in 2016 and worked one year as a freelance journalist, mainly for the quality weekly Knack. After obtaining her Master in History in 2017, with an MA dissertation on hunger strikes in Belgian prisons during the interwar period, she left journalism and started working as a doctoral researcher at the centre for Historical Research into Urban Transformation processes (HOST). She prepares a PhD on the relationship between local police and migrants at the end of the long 19th century,  under the supervision of prof. dr. Anne Winter and co-supervision of prof. dr. Margo De Koster.
